# Credits

> What a send costs, the free allowance and top-ups.

## What costs a credit

One credit = one recipient on a live email. An email to one person costs 1; an email with 2 `to` and 1 `cc` costs 3. The response tells you in `credits_charged`.

These are free:

* Emails sent with a test key.
* Suppressed recipients, which PulseSend removes before sending.
* Emails that end up `failed`: their credits are refunded.

## Free allowance

Every team gets 3,000 emails a month for free. The allowance resets each month and is used before any credits you've bought.

## Top-ups

When you need more, buy a pack from **Top-ups** in the dashboard. Prices are in US dollars and you pay by card.

| Pack | Emails | Price |
| - | - | - |
| S | 5,000 | \$2 |
| M | 30,000 | \$11 |
| L | 120,000 | \$39 |
| XL | 500,000 | \$150 |
| Pro | 50,000 every month | \$13 / month |

Purchased credits stay valid for 12 months.

## Running out

When a live send needs more credits than you have, it fails with `402` and the code `insufficient_credits`. Nothing is sent and nothing is charged.
